Glacial Rivers on Mt. Rainier

Glacial Rivers

Mount Rainier's glacial system consists of 35 square miles of ice. Melting glaciers send waterfalls and rivers throughout the mountain. Although the rivers are far too cold for swimming, fishing is an option.

Fishing is permitted all year... Most lakes melt in early to mid-July. Fishing through the ice is not permitted. The Ohanapecosh River and its tributaries are open to fly fishing only. Specific regulations, including creel limits and special closures, are available from any ranger station. 1

And, melting glaciers send avalanches and mudflows through the mountain as well. It is advised that visitors stay on the trails and be aware of possible danger.
